Ross Whitmore named new Rochdale Hornets captain

We are excited to announce that Ross Whitmore has been named the new club captain of Rochdale Hornets ahead of the 2026 season.
Whitmore takes on the role following the retirement of Duane Straugheir at the end of last season.
Joining the club from Hunslet in May, Whitmore went on to make 11 appearances during the second half of last season.
Demonstrating a high level of performance during his opening few appearances, the club moved quickly to tie the 25-year-old down to a new deal back in August.
On the captaincy, Whitmore said: “It’s a massive honour. For Gary Thornton and Andy Mazey to put their faith in me is a big thing, and I’ve taken the opportunity with both hands.
“I’m not going to change who I am. I’ll lead with my attitude and effort in everything I do, and hopefully let the boys do their thing out on the field.
Rochdale Hornets head coach Gary Thornton said: “I like what Ross brings to the group. He’s very honest to start with, and he’s also hard-working and conscientious.
“He’s a good leader and does all the right things. He loves rugby league and that mindset is quite infectious.
“I like those qualities from Ross, and he’s brought them to this group. During pre-season he’s brought good standards to training, and as we’ve already seen, he’s a leader on the field as well.”
